Acrylics and Pastels are not the only mediums that I work in, but they certainly have been among the most important, and my most consistent mediums. I began using acrylics in the early sixtys at the University of Iowa in place of oil paint, and have loved them ever since. I originally began using pastels to do plein aire studies for my acrylic paintings.  I discovered almost immediately a love for pastel that precluded their use only for studies.  I continue to work in both pastel and acrylic, often combining the two together.

Printmaking was one of my main areas of study at the University of Iowa.  The printmaking department there was highly esteemed with Maurice Lasansky at its head.  I have over the years worked with wood cuts, screen prints and lately have returned to intaglio printing, drypoint in particular,  with the addition of monoprint techniques.

Both my painting and my printmaking originate in my love of drawing.  I draw all the time, and most of my other work comes from my drawing.  Years ago, I did a lot of plein air painting. Now, almost all of my plein air work is drawing, and from these spontaneous drawings derives my work in the other mediums.
